1. Plain Fins (Unstamped Flat Fins)
Structure Feature
Plain fins retain flat surfaces without stamped shapes or notches. The axial fan of the outdoor unit pushes ambient air through condenser fins for heat exchange.
Working Performance
When wind speed stays at a low level, the heat transfer coefficient will decrease as the number of copper tube rows rises, and more heat stagnation areas will form, especially for copper tubes with larger diameters. The negative influence on heat transfer coefficient will be weakened when wind speed is elevated.
Principle Explanation
The fluid boundary layer generated by airflow brings shear resistance and flow loss, hindering airflow movement and keeping main airflow away from fin surfaces, which restricts heat exchange efficiency.
2. Corrugated Fins (Wave-shaped Stamped Fins)
Structure Feature
Corrugated fins are stamped into continuous W-shaped wave structures. Ambient air passes through curved channels of corrugated fins for heat exchange driven by outdoor axial fans.
Working Performance
When wind speed stays at a low level, the heat transfer coefficient drops noticeably with the increase of copper tube rows, and the pressure drop registers a higher level compared with plain fins. The heat transfer coefficient improves noticeably under ample air volume or with an expanded windward area.
Supplementary Note
Simply increasing motor power and rotating speed to expand air volume is not a suitable solution. The design of slits aims to interrupt the continuous thickening of the fluid boundary layer, thin the boundary layer and reduce heat stagnation areas, so as to optimize heat exchange efficiency.
