Fin Coating Technology of Heat Exchangers

Fin Coating Technology of Heat Exchangers
In the early stage, heat exchanger fins were directly fabricated from bare aluminum with relatively large thickness. After long-term operation, bare aluminum fins tend to produce powdery oxides due to oxidation, which adversely affects equipment operation and sanitary conditions.
Coating formulas adopted by different air conditioner brands and units vary slightly. At present, three mainstream composite coatings are widely applied to outdoor unit fins in the market, namely the hydrophilic layer (acrylic resin with surfactant layer), anti-corrosion layer (epoxy acrylate), and anti-salt fog protective layer (chromate-based protection material).

Functions of Anti-corrosion Layer & Anti-salt Fog Layer

The functions of anti-corrosion and anti-salt fog layers are straightforward. Fins covered with such coatings gain improved resistance against corrosion and salt spray erosion, which extends the service life of fins. The protective effect is particularly remarkable in coastal high-salinity areas.

Why Hydrophilic Coating Is Adopted & Its Working Principles

Before the popularization of fin coating technology, air-cooled heat pumps were equipped with bare aluminum fins. When air conditioners operate under high-humidity conditions, moisture in the air condenses on fin surfaces and forms water bridges.

Water bridges will increase wind resistance, raise operating energy consumption, reduce the effective heat exchange area, and degrade overall heat exchange efficiency.

Fin surface coating technology emerged in the 1990s, bringing hydrophilic coating into practical use.
Core Functions of Hydrophilic Coating
Under high humidity, hydrophilic coating inhibits the formation of water bridges. Condensed water spreads evenly and flows down along fin  instead of forming accumulated water droplets:
  1. Reduce air duct wind resistance and cut energy consumption;
  2. Maximize the effective heat exchange area and boost heat exchange performance;
  3. Endow fins with mild self-cleaning performance;
  4. The hydrophilic coating layer is ultra-thin and exerts negligible adverse influence on heat conduction and heat exchange efficiency.
These merits account for the extensive application of hydrophilic coatings in modern air conditioning products.
