Overview and Development Stages of Condensers
Condensers and evaporators are collectively referred to as heat exchangers, which are core components of refrigeration systems such as refrigerators and air conditioners. Driven by technological iteration and process innovation, the development of the industry can be divided into four major stages with distinct characteristics in technology, product forms and industrial trends. The detailed development history is as follows:
I. Initial Stage (1920s–1970s)
Heat exchangers first originated in Europe. The early tubular heat exchangers featured a simple structure but suffered from small heat transfer area, bulky volume and low heat transfer efficiency. With the continuous upgrading of mechanical manufacturing processes, the iteration of industrial products accelerated gradually. Plate heat exchangers emerged in the 1920s. In the 1930s, spiral plate heat exchangers were developed in Sweden and plate-and-fin heat exchangers in the United Kingdom, greatly enriching the product categories of heat exchangers. In the 1960s, China and Sweden independently developed umbrella plate heat exchangers based on self-developed technologies. In the mid-1970s, heat pipe heat exchangers were successfully developed, laying a solid technical foundation for the subsequent technological upgrading of heat exchangers.
II. Forming and Development Stage (Late 1970s–Early 1990s)
During this period, China realized the independent large-scale production of refrigerators and air conditioners, driving the initial development of the supporting heat exchanger industry. The production processes of various products became increasingly mature and the production systems were continuously improved. The structural forms and functional applications of heat exchangers gradually diversified, with specialized products tailored for different refrigeration equipment coming into being one after another. Specifically, mainstream heat exchangers for refrigerators include wire tube type, blow molding type, short fin type and plate tube type. For air conditioners, fin-and-tube evaporators and condensers applicable to window-type integrated machines, split wall-mounted machines and split floor-standing machines achieved large-scale industrial application.
III. Green Refrigerant Upgrading Stage (1990s)
To reduce the damage of refrigeration equipment to the atmospheric ozone layer and protect the ecological environment, the global community promoted the replacement of traditional fluorine-containing refrigerants with new environmentally friendly refrigerants in accordance with international environmental protection agreements. Starting from the mid-1990s, most domestic home appliance enterprises devoted themselves to the research, development and mass production of refrigerators using green refrigerants, and the supporting heat exchangers for refrigerators were synchronously upgraded to meet new environmental protection technical standards. By the late 1990s, heat exchangers for refrigerators had basically completed the environmental upgrading, marking the entry into a new era of green and pollution-free development.
IV. Environmental Protection and Energy Conservation Upgrading Stage (21st Century – Present)
Since the 21st century, China has become the world’s core production base for refrigerators and air conditioners, and the domestic heat exchanger industry has entered a period of vigorous development with continuous innovation and optimization in production technologies and processing techniques. At present, green environmental protection and high efficiency and energy conservation have become the core development themes of the heat exchanger industry. In terms of product design, the structural and functional research and development of heat exchangers focus on meeting the modern needs of variable-frequency operation and fresh-keeping performance of household refrigerators.
Meanwhile, the application scenarios of refrigeration heat exchange equipment have been continuously expanded. Evaporators and condensers are no longer limited to the household appliance refrigeration field, and have been widely applied in solar energy supporting equipment, vehicle refrigeration equipment, marine refrigeration equipment and many other fields. With the continuous innovation and upgrading of product structure, functional design, new material replacement and intelligent production processes, evaporators and condensers will have broad development space and application prospects in the future.
